Mission:
Towers of the Void (Series Premiere)
Location: On the/ Fort Meyer
James and Emma rode for hours a day only stopping when they needed gas or to sleep. They had born witness to horrible, gruesome sights that would be more appropriate in nightmares. They were currently stopped taking on more gas. "We're getting close. We should be at Fort Meyer by tomorrow or no later than the day after if our luck stays good." He told his wife while filling the tank of the motorcycle all while scanning the surroundings for any machines or people. All seemed quiet. Perhaps the people were hiding, which he couldn't blame them for or had moved to someplace they thought was safer. There were also no machines which he was greatly relieved over.
"I still don't get why we've had such an easy journey" Emma was suspicious, maybe it was just her, maybe she was overthinking things. "Its been too quiet, either we're not considered a threat now, or we're being allowed t move freely. Why exterminate most of the human population to leave stragglers behind? it doesn't feel right."
"All good questions to be sure. I think I may have some possible answers. The machines killed most of the population. Leaving stragglers. In the machine's eye they are no threat and can be taken out at the machine's leisure. As for us, I think they don't consider us a threat. We're two people on a motorcycle and i also think they are curious to see where we are headed." James replied.
“Curious denotes emotion, computers don’t have emotion” Emma frowned. “They want to exterminate us, which says to me that we’re considered a threat in some way. We are the creators after all.”
"I don't disagree and perhaps I used the wrong word when I said emotion, but I think the machines want to understand us better because with a better understanding of us their enemy, they will be able to defeat us quicker. For as you pointed out we created them, and they know the chances of us defeating them grow the longer the war goes on."
Emma nodded. “That’s true, anyway let’s get on the road the sooner we get to the base, the better I’ll feel.”
James nodded putting the gas hose up and putting the cap back on the tank. "Get no argument from me. Hop on. We're in the home stretch. We should arrive at the base day after tomorrow."
Hopping onto the bike Emma couldn’t help but wish everything hadn’t gone to hell. With all that had happened she had finally welcomed James back into her life only to have the apocalypse arrive. Everything seemed so much more complicated, though it had brought them back together in an odd kind of way. “The sooner the better in my opinion.”
James got on the bike and spurred it into life. He smiled at Emma. Life or perhaps it was fate had brought them back together and he was determined to keep them together end of the world or not. He put the motorcycle in gear and the left the station and headed back onto the road and on the path to hopefully more survivors and hope. "An opinion I fully share." He replied.
